Marketing professionals rush to agree with the businesses, most companies marketing departments have a regular ritual of selecting the branded gift item for the next marketing campaign so they have something to gain. Though they do have a point getting a businesses’ name prominently in the minds of as many potential customers as possible is a good thing, it does help sales. A few months ago, one of our suppliers’ customer service representatives came to a meeting to discuss renewing our service contract for the next year. She regretfully informed me that the increase in price this year will be rather above the rate of inflation and that yet again they cannot commit to providing an onsite spares cache or increasing the hours of coverage because of the cost. As the meeting draws to a close we are presented with a list of Corporate Gifts including Promotional bags, Promotional golf products, promotional keyrings, Promotional mugs, Promotional bags, promotional pens, promotional umbrellas and promotional clothing such as Promotional shirts and baseball caps and asked to take our pick. Somehow, I was not too enthusiastic I would prefer them to finance onsite spares and said as much. I began to look at alternative suppliers.

It is increasingly easy to find and investigate likely service suppliers on the internet by not only conventional searches but also using blogs and other social media. I asked three potential suppliers and our current supplier to submit proposals. One supplier came up with some innovative moneysaving solutions for our needs and we investigated using them further, one thing that did emerge was that yes they did use corporate gifts but only sparingly and always items that would be long lasting and genuinely useful such as promotional mugs, Promotional pens, Promotional umbrellas or Promotional keyrings. Such Promotional Gifts as Promotional clothing, promotional bags, promotional shirts and most promotional golf products they rather felt were somewhat wasteful and were not Promotional Products that they would give.

As I said, they had innovative ideas and offered better prices, so they got the business. We still get a range of Promotional Gifts, which whilst it is smaller in number is a better considered set of Promotional Items I feel. In conclusion, do I think that the use of Promotional Products is good business practice? Well of course, it is, but the businesses that benefit most from them are the ones that already do a good job of listening to their customers and being a little innovative in doing business.
